Plastics and Polymers

The discovery and development of plastics and polymers is one of the great success stories of chemical science. Today polymers can be found everywhere, the range of applications that far exceeds that of any other traditional material from packaging materials, adhesives, foams, plastic containers, textiles, fibres and construction parts in airplanes and automobiles.

The major compounds of polymers are Carbon and Hydrogen, in some polymers combined with minor concentrations of elements like Oxygen, Nitrogen or Chlorine. Material properties can be easily modified by additives and changes in the composition or linkage to fit the specific needs for the later use. Polymers can be adjusted regarding all kind of properties like color, strength, weight, resistance against fire or certain chemicals.

During development and production the compounds in polymers have to be controlled strictly to meet the national and international regulations avoiding potential danger due to hazardous and toxic substances. The directives for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) as well as End of life Vehicle (ELV) are restrictions for the use of Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), Lead (Pb), Chromium (VI) (Cr) and polybrominated flame retardents (PBB and PBDE) to decrease potential risks to health or environment.

S4 PIONEER
S4 PIONEER

For all tasks in polymer research and product development X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) can identify and quantify the concentrations of additives (pigments, fillers, flame retardents, stabilizers) like Antimony, Barium, Bromium, Calcium, Copper, Phophorus, Titanium or Zinc.

The S8 TIGER 1K is performing elemental analysis combining high analytical flexibility with low detection limits and high precision without the need for cooling water or counter gas supply.

The high speed, high throughput spectrometer S4 PIONEER is enabling the reliable analysis of traces from catalysts as well as of hazardous elements combined with high precision and high accuracy.

Bruker AXS is offering PETRO-QUANT as standardless solution for the S4 PIONEER and S8 TIGER, dedicated for petrochemical applications, providing a calibration for typical elements in polymer research or development and optimized measurement conditions for reliable elemental analysis from the very beginning.

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Analysis for process and quality control in polymer production

For process and quality control in polymer production the reliable and precise determination of all kind of additives is demanded. Therefore X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) with it’s easy and fast sample preparation technique is often the only choice.

The S8 TIGER 1K as well as the highspeed, high throughput spectrometer S4 PIONEER offering the full capabilities for additives as well as for traces in polymers and plastics in process and quality control.

For the dedicated determination of additives in daily routine often smaller instruments are required. The S2 RANGER fit your needs: It offers high analytical performance and is easier than ever to operate, reducing the training time to a minimum and assuring error-free operation in routine.
